Five-Year-Old Boy Killed by Falling Pipe at Unsafe Construction Site in Fatullah; Settlement Offer Sparks Controversy

A five-year-old boy, Muntasir Islam Hamza, was killed after being struck by an iron pipe at an under-construction building site in Fatullah, Narayanganj. The tragic incident has triggered widespread grief and anger in the area. Meanwhile, allegations of an attempt to settle the matter through a financial arrangement have sparked further controversy.

According to local sources, piling work was underway at a construction site in the area when the incident occurred. Witnesses claim that the work was being carried out without adequate safety measures. While the child was walking along the road near the site, a heavy iron pipe suddenly fell and struck him on the head.

Hamza was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, where doctors later declared him dead.

The victimโ€™s father, Rubel Hossain, was working as a street hawker in Cumilla at the time of the incident. Upon receiving news of his sonโ€™s death, he rushed back to Narayanganj. However, soon after the incident, allegations emerged that some individuals attempted to settle the matter by offering financial compensation.

Family members claim that a proposal of three lakh taka was made to resolve the issue. A local political figure was reportedly present during the discussion regarding the proposed settlement.

Sidddiqur Rahman Ujjal, Organizational Secretary of the district Tantidal, told journalists that he attended the meeting at the request of the victimโ€™s family.
โ€œThe contractor offered some financial assistance, but it was not meant to pressure the family into accepting a settlement,โ€ he said.

However, the grieving father rejected the offer.

โ€œNo amount of money can bring my son back. I do not want any settlement. I want justice for my child,โ€ Rubel Hossain said.

The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Fatullah Model Police Station stated that preliminary findings suggest the construction work was being conducted without proper safety measures. Authorities are investigating the incident and legal action will be taken against those found responsible.

Local residents have demanded a thorough investigation and punishment for those responsible. They say the tragedy highlights the dangers of construction work carried out without adequate safety precautions and have called for stricter monitoring to prevent similar incidents in the future.
