Rape victim killed in Narsingdi for seeking justice

In Narsingdi, a 15-year-old girl was abducted from her father and murdered after her family sought justice for her rape, highlighting a disturbing pattern of lawlessness, impunity for local thugs, and apparent negligence or inaction by authorities.

The incident occurred in Madhabdi Upazila’s Mahishashura Union. The victim, a resident of a rented house in the area, lived with her family; her father works as a textile factory labourer.

According to police, family members, and local sources, the girl had been in contact with a local youth known as a troublemaker named Nura. About 15 days prior, on her way home, she was forcibly abducted by Nura and 5-6 accomplices, who allegedly gang-raped her.

Desperate for justice, the family approached a former member of the local Union Parishad (UP), Ahmadullah (from Ward No. 9), instead of going directly to the police. Rather than receiving support or formal action, the family was reportedly pressured to resolve the matter informally and even told to leave the area. This reflects a common breakdown where local influential figures prioritise “settlements” over legal processes, allowing perpetrators to evade accountability and fostering an environment of fear and lawlessness.

Angered by the complaint to the former UP member, Nura and his group escalated their actions. On Wednesday night, as the father was taking his daughter to her aunt’s house, the gang intercepted them in the Beelpar area and abducted the girl right in front of him. Despite the family searching desperately throughout the night, she remained missing.

Locals discovered her body in a mustard field between Beelpar and Darikandi on Thursday morning. She was found with an orna (scarf) wrapped around her neck, indicating possible strangulation. Madhabdi police recovered the body, prepared the inquest report, and sent it to Narsingdi Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

The victim’s elder brother told reporters: The former UP member had promised a resolution but demanded they leave the area afterwards. They had agreed to relocate by March 1. On the night of the abduction, around 8pm, the father was escorting her when Noora and six others approached and snatched her away. After searching all night, they found her body in the mustard field the next morning. The family plans to file a case and demands justice for those who tortured and killed her.

The accused, including Noora and his accomplices, have gone into hiding. The former UP member Ahmadullah is also untraceable, with his phone switched off.

Madhabdi Police OC Kamal Hossain acknowledged the link: The abduction and murder stemmed from seeking rape justice through the former UP member instead of the police station. He suggested the family should have approached the police directly from the start. Efforts are underway to arrest those involved.

This tragic case exposes glaring failures: rampant local criminality unchecked by law enforcement, reliance on informal “justice” systems that protect perpetrators and intimidate victims’ families, and police advice that appears to shift blame onto victims for not reporting earlierโ€”despite evident fear of retaliation and systemic barriers to accessing formal justice. Such incidents underscore deep-rooted lawlessness where powerful locals operate with near-impunity, often with tacit tolerance, leading to escalation from rape to murder.
