Sheikh Hasina condemns custodial killing of Ramesh Chandra Sen

Awami League President and five-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has condemned and protested the custodial killing of former Water Resources Minister Ramesh Chandra Sen, who was denied medical care in prison by the murderous fascist Yunus regime.

Ramesh Chandra, 86, was a member of the partyโ€™s Advisory Council, a former Presidium member, and a former Member of Parliament from the Thakurgaon-1 constituency.

In a statement on Saturday, she said that countless party leaders and activists are being killed in a systematic manner. They are denied bail, tortured in remand, and denied proper treatment in jail.

Ramesh Chandra Senโ€™s hands were tied with a rope by a mob, who tortured him before handing him over to the police on August 16, 2025

The fascist regime is killing Awami League leaders and activists by directly and indirectly instigating violence or by using the state machinery. In a planned manner, they have stripped Awami League leaders, activists, and supporters of their civil rights, she added.

โ€œThey are not only turning them into stateless citizens but are also carrying out uninterrupted killings one after another. Children, the young, and the elderlyโ€”women and men alikeโ€”are all falling victim to these indiscriminate killings.

โ€œThe killing of Mr. Ramesh Chandra Sen is part of this very continuity. I strongly condemn and protest this murder. At the same time, I call upon the conscience of the world to take note of the hellish state terror being unleashed, with state patronage, against the leaders and activists of the Awami Leagueโ€”an historic and tradition-rich political party.โ€

The statement further said that Mr. Ramesh Chandra Sen was a senior leader of the Awami League. Rising through grassroots politics, he earned recognition at the national level and was a true leader of the masses. He was arrested on baseless, fabricated, and false cases and kept in prison without trial. Despite falling ill in custody, he was deliberately denied even minimum medical treatment and was killed in a planned manner.

โ€œNot only himโ€”leaders and activists of the Awami League at all levels are being killed in this way. International human rights organisations have already published reports on the state terror and gross human rights violations carried out by the illegal occupying government. Such monstrous misrule cannot continue in the governance of a state in modern civilisation.โ€

In the statement, Bangabandhuโ€™s daughter, Sheikh Hasina, said that the illegally occupying government is running the state machinery against people of all classes and professions. The wounds they have inflicted on the body of the state in recent times are not easily healed.

โ€œHowever, the Bangladesh Awami League practices politics for the welfare of the people. The partyโ€™s future politics will be guided by the commitment to heal the wounds created within the state and society and to make them safe for every citizen.โ€

Ramesh Chandra was a five-time elected MP from Thakurgaon-1 and a pillar of the Awami League. He had been battling health complications since contracting Covid in 2020. But after Yunus’ goons slapped him with bogus charges, he was arrested from his residence in Thakurgaon on August 16, 2025, and hauled into prison.

Shown arrested in three cases, including one involving murder, he was first sent to Thakurgaon District Jail and moved to Dinajpur District Jail the following day.

Ramesh Chandra Sen first entered parliament after winning the Thakurgaon-1 seat in a by-election in 1997. He later won the same constituency in the 2008, 2014, 2018, and 2024 general elections.
