Syeda Rizwana Hasan, a controversial adviser to the interim administration, loves to preach about protecting nature and conserving wildlifeโempty slogans that fall apart the moment real action is demanded. In yet another glaring display of breathtaking hypocrisy, Syeda Rizwana and the Forest Department turned a pristine corner of the Sundarbans into a raucous picnic ground, shattering the silence essential for wildlife and mocking any genuine effort at conservation.
Under the laughable banner of raising awareness about increasing tiger numbers and enriching the Sundarbans, the adviser held a disruptive “meeting” right in the heart of the forest at the Bajbaja patrol post area.
Instead of staying in nearby populated areas with plenty of space, these fools dragged everything deep into the mangroves: rented pandals from Koyra Upazila, roaring generators running all day because there’s no electricity, and blaring soundboxes to make sure their pompous speeches could be heard over the chaos they created.
The event ran from 11am to 3:30pm on Thursday, turning a sacred habitat into a noisy carnival. Forest-dependent locals and genuine environmentalists are rightly furious at this arrogant intrusion. Participantsโforest workers hauled in by trawlerโdescribed rows of chairs, people gorging on biryani, and the whole scene looking far more like a forest department junket than any serious awareness program.
Local resident Monirul Islam nailed it: “We saw wild boars wandering around, but the human crowd and constant racket drove them fleeing deeper into the forest. What possible sense does it make to hold something like this inside the woods?”

The sheer dishonesty is staggering. The banner falsely listed the venue as Kashiyabad Forest Station in Koyra Upazilaโa location in human settlementโwhile the actual disruption happened deep in the jungle at the confluence of the Jhapjhopia and Shakbaria rivers.
When questioned about ditching populated areas for the sensitive forest interior, officials spewed nonsense. Khulna Range Assistant Conservator of Forests Md. Shariful Islam claimed it was to avoid crowds ahead of national elections.
Critics hit the nail on the head: Tiger conservation project funds were squandered to create mayhem in the tigers’ own home. The pandals, noise, and generator fumes inflicted far more harm on the environment than any supposed awareness gained.
Even Sundarbans West Divisional Forest Officer AZM Hasanur Rahman had to admitโgrudginglyโthat holding such an event inside the forest was completely wrong. He promised an investigation and orders against future forest-based programs. Too little, too late.

This isn’t conservationโit’s blatant environmental vandalism dressed up as activism, led by an adviser whose lofty words about protecting the Sundarbans ring utterly hollow when her department treats the forest like a cheap party venue. The hypocrisy stinks worse than the diesel fumes they pumped into the mangroves.
Her hypocrisy knows no bounds. Daughter of Syed Mahibul Hasan, a leader of the Pakistan Muslim League who opposed the Liberation War, Syeda Rizwana is accused of corruption, nepotism, abuse of power, and awarding government contracts to her confidantes.
Last year, she created an uproar after the massive looting of white stone in Sylhet came to the fore. Moreover, people slammed her for arranging a red carpet welcome during the inauguration of a canal excavation work in Mirpur.
