Sheikh Hasinaโ€™s meeting with UK Awami League leaders in Delhi creates hype

Awami League President and five-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been residing in India since August 5, 2024, recently hosted a delegation from the UK chapter of the party at her secure residence in Delhi. The meeting, held on January 21, has sparked significant interest and speculation about her ongoing political influence and personal well-being.

According to accounts from the visiting leaders, Sheikh Hasina is accommodated in a large, well-secured residence in Delhi, provided by the Indian government with great respect and dignity. The property features multiple layers of security, and numerous staff members are assigned to assist her with her daily needs. Her younger sister, Sheikh Rehana, regularly visits and sometimes stays with her for extended periods, along with a few close associates.

The delegation was subjected to rigorous security protocols: no mobile phones or personal items were allowed, and after Sheikh Hasina’s personal approval and thorough security clearance, they were escorted by security vehicles to the residence.

A Prolonged And Uplifting Encounter

The five senior UK Awami League leadersโ€”Jalal Uddin (President), Syed Sajidur Rahman Faruq (General Secretary), Anwaruzzaman Chowdhury (Joint General Secretary and former Sylhet City Corporation Mayor), Ahad Chowdhury (Organisational Secretary), and Jamal Khan (Joint General Secretary of UK Jubo League)โ€”spent nearly five hours with Sheikh Hasina, according to the daily Prothom Alo.

The leaders described Sheikh Hasina as appearing highly confident and resolute throughout the meeting. They noted no visible signs of physical illness, though she seemed to have lost a little weight. One leader emphasised: “She appeared confident and resolute… She devoted the entire time to us.”

This portrayal underscores her enduring self-assurance and determination despite the challenges of exile.

The delegation completed a week-long visit to India and returned to London on January 26, said the daily Manabzamin.

Since arriving in India, Sheikh Hasina has maintained contact with party leaders and supporters through virtual means, including a virtual address to UK Awami League members in December 2024 and occasional audio messages. She has also given email interviews to international media and, more recently, delivered an audio address at events in Delhi. However, she has not appeared publicly in video formats.

Her son, Sajeeb Wazed Joy, has suggested in interviews that she may withdraw from active politics and intends to retire, even if conditions allow the Awami League’s return to Bangladesh’s political scene.

The meeting has generated curiosity about potential future political manoeuvres, especially as Bangladesh approaches elections amid debates over inclusivity and stability.
