Police on Sunday provided some sensational information to the media about Enayet Karim Chowdhury, a Bangladesh-born American citizen arrested in Dhaka a day before, to create hype.
Detectives have crafted an unrealistic story, with many unanswered questions, as this unknown man has been identified as a highly influential person, capable of overthrowing the US-backed Jamaat-controlled interim government, led by Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
Son of Abdul Karim Chowdhury, Enayet, 55, was born in Bangladesh and has been residing in the United States since he left the country in 1988. He later obtained a US passport in 2004, police say.
Enayet came to Dhaka from New York on September 6, stayed two days at Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel, before moving to a flat in the Gulshan-2 diplomatic zone.
Around 10:30am on Saturday, detectives intercepted a Prado jeep carrying Enayet, moving suspiciously in the Minto Road area. After primary interrogation, police detained him and seized his two iPhones, from which they obtained โsensational information.โ
On Sunday, the Ramna police filed a case against him under the Anti-Terrorism Act and produced him in court with a prayer for a seven-day remand.

The case statement says that Enayet held โsecret meetings with government officials, policymakers, influential leaders of various political parties and businesspersons and shared information with foreign intelligence agencies to destroy public security.โ
Police say Enayet is an agent of a foreign intelligence agency and has come to Dhaka to overthrow the Yunus-led government, which is โin a fragile positionโ and โdistanced from the Armyโ, and that his mission is to โwork towards forming a new national or caretaker government.โ
The Supreme Court is set to hold its final hearing on the caretaker government system on October 21.
According to the police, Enayet also claimed that the US government is dissatisfied with the current interim government. So, it will determine the next head of the government.
