Police killer Faiyazโ€™s brother Shibir’s GS candidate in JUCSU polls

Photos of Hasnatul Islam Faiyaz, a first-year student at Dhaka College, drew sympathy from the media when police produced him in court, tying his waist with a rope near the end of the anti-government protests last year.

The court placed him on police remand, but it was cancelled due to criticisms.

After the fall of the government, Faiyaz attended a conference of Islami Chhatra Shibir, the student wing of radical Jamaat-e-Islami that masterminded the student-led anti-quota protests and the anarchy.

At the event, the presenter asked Faiyaz to remove his mask and not fear anything since the interim government is totally under the control of the war criminal Jamaat party and its radical Shibir members, who are unpopular for brutally killing their political opponents, including by cutting the tendons.

Police had arrested Faiyaz in connection with the murder of two police officers in Jatrabari. He was identified from videos and phone conversations. He was also involved in hanging a police officer from an overbridge.

Throughout the movement and afterwards, the protesting students and activists of the BNP, Jamaat, Hefazat-e-Islam and Bangladesh Khelafat Majlish killed the police in a planned way.

Even in 2013-15, Jamaat-Shibir members killed dozens of police members. In the following years, banned militant groups Jamaโ€™atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and Islamic State killed several police members, while Hizb ut-Tahrir and Ansar al-Islam, an offshoot of al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS,) regularly campaign for killing the police and judges.

Faiyaz was inspired by Shibirโ€™s ideology to kill the police officers in Jatrabari on July 18-19 last year.

His brother, Mazharul Islam, was the general secretary candidate in the Jahangirnagar University Central Studentsโ€™ Union (JUCSU) polls, held on September 11.

The next day, netizens were outraged after learning that Faiyaz and Mazhar are siblings.

They expressed concern over the future of the academic atmosphere at JU, with the radical Islamist group establishing supremacy on the campus.

On the social media platforms, netizens also criticised Shibir leaders, including the president of the JU unit, Muhibur Rahman Muhib, for influencing the Election Commission from the previous night.

All five panels, except for the Shibir-backed one, boycotted the election, alleging vote rigging.
