Awami League condemns death of unarmed worker in army firing at Uttara EPZ

The Bangladesh Awami League has condemned the brutal killing of an RMG worker in Nilphamari while protesting over factory closure and layoffs on Tuesday.

In a statement, the party said that every murder and act of terror committed during this illegitimate occupation, led by illegitimate usurper and killerโ€“fascist Muhammad Yunus, will face the harshest justice on the soil of Bengal.

โ€œโ€ฆthe blood of workers will not go in vain. However soundly you may sleep in false peace, every single drop of blood will be accounted for,โ€ the party said on Wednesday.

Deceased Habibur Rahman, 20, was an employee of a knitting factory named Eque International. A factory named Evergreen had recently laid off 51 employees, creating tensions within the EPZ. On Tuesday, Evergreen announced an indefinite closure without paying wages or benefits, posting a notice at the main gate of the EPZ.

At 8am, when Evergreen workers arrived for duty, they found the notice and were unable to enter the factory. They then staged a demonstration on the road in front of the EPZ, blocking traffic on the Nilphamariโ€“Saidpur highway.

Army and police personnel arrived at the scene and attempted to disperse them. In response, agitated workers threw bricks at the security forces, leading the army to open fire. Habibur Rahman was shot dead on the spot, and 10 others were injured.

The Awami League said: โ€œThe worker who gave his life stands in the lineage of workers who sacrificed themselves in every struggle for independence. This is not the first time; even before Nilphamari, workers were gunned down in other places while demanding their rights. Instead of addressing just demands, this illegitimate regime has sought to silence workersโ€™ voices through violence.โ€

Bangladesh has turned into a ceaseless river of blood. Yunus is slaughtering people indiscriminately in order to cling to power at any cost. This illegitimate and rootless regime treats any citizen who raises their voice for rights as an enemy.

โ€œThe strength of the masses terrifies them. That is why they rely on bullets to suppress those who stand up for justice.โ€

The statement said Yunus and his clique are building a fortress of power upon piles of corpses. Political parties that have compromised on the question of power have abandoned principle and ideology, siding with the blood-soaked Yunus in absolute support against the people.

The Awami League firmly believes that there can be no betrayal of the peopleโ€™s blood, no compromise with a murderous cabal.

Earlier, a garment worker, named Kawser Ahmed, was shot dead by the army in the Ashulia area on September 30 last year, while at least five people were shot dead by the army and the police in Gopalganj in July, and nearly 70 people were killed extrajudicially by the two forces in the past year. No neutral investigation has been carried out in any of the incidents.
