Youth with disabilities serves 9 days in prison for supporting Awami League

Sayeed Sheikh was arrested from a procession of the Awami League in Gulistan on August 25. A police officer was dragging him while he was holding his leg, requesting to spare him. Some people accompanying the police assaulted Sayeed, as seen in videos on social media.

In the case documents, the police said that he had previously spoken on television in support of the Awami League, Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina.

Social media was flooded with his photos and videos

Twenty-one-year-old Sayeed is a beneficiary of the Ministry of Social Welfareโ€™s allowance for people with disabilities.

Relatives say Sayeed is congenitally disabled. He is speech-impaired, cannot walk properly and has other complications. He has to be fed and taken care of all the time. Previously, he had been chained.

When he was produced in court with handcuffs, the court rejected his bail petition and ordered the prison authorities to get a specialist doctor to examine and submit an opinion on the matter.

Since then, he has lived an inhumane life in prison, his lawyers told the court on Tuesday, when Sayeed was produced in court wearing handcuffs.

They also submitted the government allowance card. However, the prison authorities were unable to submit that expert opinion.

Considering his physical condition, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Zakir Hossain granted him bail, considering the physical condition of the accused, on a bond of Tk500.

His arrest and subsequent jailing created a huge uproar in the media when social media users vehemently criticised the fascist Yunus regime for repressive tactics and abuse of power.
