Arafat laments Justice Khairul Haque handcuffed behind his back

Bangladesh Awami League leader and former state minister Mohammad A Arafat has slammed the Yunus regime for arresting former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque in a murder case and handcuffing him at the court.

In a post on X, Arafat said Yunus has handcuffed Justice Khairul, 81, out of pure political retaliation to set the stage for the total dismantling of the legal system.

Following the August 5 changeover, Yunus had all of his cases unlawfully withdrawn.

Meanwhile, he had his administration illegally imprison dissenting writers, journalists, human rights advocates, academics, former high court justices, culture activists, and others on wholesale false criminal charges.

Yunus is also using the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to malign the Awami League leadership and supporters.

Arafat explained the hypocrisy of Yunus, mentioning that the Nobel laureate was sentenced to six months in prison and fined Tk30,000 for violating labour laws.

The case, filed by some employees of Grameen Telecom, said they were not granted annual leave with pay, encashment of leave, or payment in lieu of leave. Grameen Telecom also did not establish a Workersโ€™ Participation Fund or a Welfare Fund, and 5% of the companyโ€™s profit was not deposited into the fund formed under the Labour Welfare Foundation Act, as required.

โ€œEven though Yunus was given a six-month prison sentence in this very Bangladesh during the Awami League’s rule, he was respectfully released on bail and never placed in handcuffs. But under Yunus, a former Chief Justice (81 years old) was handcuffed and taken to jail on the pretext of a fabricated murder case,โ€ he added.

Detectives arrested Justice Khairul from his Dhanmondi residence on Thursday morning and quizzed him at the Mintoo Road office. He was produced before a court with his hands cuffed behind him at 8:15pm.

The police did not seek his remand and prayed to the court for his confinement in jail until the investigation was complete.

Justice Khairul was not allowed to have a lawyer to represent him.

Outside the court custody, the BNP-leaning lawyers created a mob, forcing the prison van to take extra security measures.
