Report: Adviser Asif Mahmud took Tk20 crore for a transfer

YouTube-based Nagorik TV’s Head of News, Nazmus Saquib, has released an audio clip that exposes the corruption of the LGRD Ministry and Sports and Youth Ministry Adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, one of the most controversial student representatives.

Abdul Latif Khan, a joint secretary of the Local Government Department, had a hobby of getting transferred as the chief executive officer of the Gazipur City Corporation.

In February, a vested interest group decided to invest in this transfer in exchange for a bribe of Tk20 crore, hoping to loot using the position.

They approached the personal officer of the adviser, Mahfuzul Alam Bhuyain. Although the PO initially asked for a bribe of Tk5 crore, later, due to Asif Mahmud’s high demands, he demanded Tk20 crore for this transfer.

Finally, in mid-February, Abdul Latif Khan got his dream transfer to the Gazipur City Corporation.

But after completing the transfer, the mother of the investor, who wanted to invest Tk20 crore, suddenly fell ill and died. Due to the death of his mother, he delayed paying the bribe.

Then, Asif Mahmud’s PO threatened to cancel the transfer order if the money was not paid.

Nazmus Saquib released a part of the phone conversation that took place at that time among the circle involved in the bribe money transaction.

He said that four months have already passed, and the person in question is still in that position. So, it can be assumed that the transaction has already taken place.

Since taking oath as the adviser, Asif Mahmud has created controversies for excessive spending of public money on travels by using helicopters, helping his father acquire a contractor license from his ministry, and corruption in recruitment of Wasa, Dhaka City Corporation, BPL, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), and other crimes.

Moazzem Hossain, Asif’s former assistant personal secretary (APS) and a student coordinator, was removed from duty in the wake of corruption charges. Later, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) launched an investigation. Based on its application, a Dhaka court blocked Moazzem’s NID and imposed a ban on his foreign travel.

Meanwhile, Asif Mahmud has been under fire for refusing to hold the oath-taking ceremony of BNP leader Ishraque Hossain, who said that the adviser lost his moral right to continue as the adviser due to presenting false and misleading information to the media, and for violating his oath of office.
