Chhatra League wants participatory election under neutral government

Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) has expressed its deepest outrage, strongest condemnation, and uncompromising protest against the ongoing campaign of state-sponsored violence, terror, and repression.

“Bangladesh is rapidly descending into disorder and anarchy amid the rise of extremism and the collapse of law and order under the mobocracy imposed by the illegitimate and unconstitutional fascist Yunus regime,” the BCL said in a statement on Sunday.

The Chhatra League, which was banned due to false allegations of terrorism in October 2024, stated that Bangladesh is currently at a critical juncture. The only viable path forward is a democratic transition.

The statement called upon the international community to compel the restoration of democratic order through a participatory, inclusive, and credible election under a newly formed neutral government. “That is the only path to stability in Bangladesh.

“Until democracy, human rights, sovereignty, and the spirit of the Liberation War are restored, the struggle of Bangladesh Students’ League will continue with unwavering resolve in defense of the sovereignty and democracy of Bangladesh.”

The country’s largest democratic student organisation and a historic pillar of the Liberation War’s legacy, the BCL, said that over recent days, Bangladesh has witnessed an unprecedented escalation of mob violence, arson, coordinated attacks, enforced disappearances, and brutal killings.

“These are not isolated or spontaneous incidents. They are the direct outcome of a meticulously engineered campaign of riots and mayhem during July–August 2024 that overthrew a constitutionally mandated, democratically elected government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the Bangladesh Awami League. What followed was the systematic replacement of constitutional governance with mob rule—organised violence, fear, and impunity.”

Ex-BCL Leader Dies in Custody

Wasiqur Rahman Babu, former president of Badda Thana Chhatra League and youth and sports secretary of the same unit’s Awami League, died in prison custody on Sunday.

People held Babu during a procession in Dhaka’s Panthapath area on September 24. They beat him up before handing him over to the Kalabagan police. Even though he was seriously injured, the authorities did not ensure his treatment.

On September 27, Babu was taken to Kashimpur Prison-2. After his remand was granted in a case, a police team went to take him into custody for questioning on Sunday afternoon.

Jail officials claimed that Babu fell unconscious at the prison gate while being handed over to the police at around 4:15pm. He was immediately taken to Tajuddin Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Countrywide Mobocracy

“Coordinated assaults on media institutions, cultural organisations, minority communities, political parties, and historic national symbols demonstrate that Bangladesh is no longer under lawful governance. The country is being deliberately pushed toward managed chaos, state failure, and authoritarian rule sustained by fear.

“Arson attacks on the offices of Prothom Alo and The Daily Star represent a direct fascist assault on press freedom. Particularly grave was the attempt to burn The Daily Star building while staff members were trapped inside—an act amounting to attempted murder. The harassment of New Age editor Nurul Kabir further confirms that journalists and independent voices are being systematically targeted. Burning the media is an attempt to destroy truth and democratic accountability.

“Similarly, attacks on Chhayanaut and Udichi—icons of Bengali secularism and progressive culture—prove that this violence is not merely political but part of a deliberate project of cultural annihilation. Extremist forces fear music, poetry, culture and free thought because they empower people to question authoritarianism.

“The most chilling crime occurred in Bhaluka, Mymensingh, where Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das was tied to a tree, beaten to death under a false “blasphemy” allegation, and his body burned. With no investigation or due process, this atrocity exposes total state failure and constitutes a grave human rights violation.

“Renewed attacks on the demolished house at Dhanmondi 32—Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s historic residence—are part of a calculated effort to erase the Liberation War’s history and delegitimise the Republic’s founding ideals.

Shashi Tharoor: Deeply concerned by mob rule under Yunus regime

“Nationwide violence has targeted political leaders across parties, including the residences of ABM Mohiuddin, Barrister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel, Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, MP Habib Hasan, Barrister Anisul Islam Mahmud, and progressive activist Sushanta Das Gupta. Awami League offices across Rajshahi, Jhenaidah, Khulna, Habiganj, and elsewhere have been torched and occupied—confirming that democracy itself is the target.

“Of serious international concern are repeated attacks on Indian diplomatic missions in Dhaka, Chattogram, Rajshahi, and Khulna, including stone-pelting and the arson of the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre on August 5, 2024, followed by renewed threats in December 2025. These acts constitute grave violations of the 1961 Vienna Convention and reflect the regime’s encouragement of mob violence as a tool of foreign policy.

“Simultaneously, the Yunus regime has carried out mass arrests of Awami League leaders and activists while openly patronising extremist groups—completely dismantling the rule of law.”
