NSI officer sacked for exposing Yunus vows to reveal more secrets

A former National Security Intelligence (NSI) officer, who was first temporarily and then permanently dismissed from service, has publicly defended his actions and pledged to disclose further details about alleged irregularities and corruption involving former Grameen Bank managing director Dr. Muhammad Yunus and his organisations.

In a detailed statement shared on social media, he attached a scanned copy of the charge sheet issued by the Chief Adviser’s Office and addressed each allegation head-on.

The charge sheet was prepared by the chief adviser’s office

The Charge Sheet

The officer outlined the main charges that led to his dismissal:

a) By publicising alleged irregularities and corruption involving Dr. Yunus and his institutions on social media, he damaged the image of the government and the state and engaged in anti-state conspiracy.

b) He participated in settling income tax cases against Dr. Muhammad Yunus and his institutions, thereby involving himself in revenue collection activities beyond his jurisdiction.

c) While serving in NSI, he took part in irregular and politically motivated investigations against Dr. Yunus and his various institutions.

d) In his confidential annual personal report, he mentioned his involvement in monitoring Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) inquiries against Dr. Yunus and his institutions, labour court proceedings against Dr. Yunus, and the resolution of ongoing income tax cases against Dr. Yunus and his entities.

These accusations formed the basis for his initial suspension and subsequent permanent termination.

Clarifying Public Statements And Professional Conduct

The officer emphasised that he had never discussed professional matters on social media during his service. However, now that he is speaking publicly, he feels it necessary to set the record straight.

He proudly acknowledged working on various inconsistencies and corruption issues related to Dr. Yunus and his institutions as part of his official duties.

Revenue Recovery Achievements During Investigations

He highlighted concrete national benefits from these efforts: Between July 2023 and May 2024, approximately Tk238 crore in unpaid taxes was recovered from Dr. Yunus and his organisations through proper legal processes.

He asserted that if cases had continued systematically, at least another Tk2,000 crore could have been recovered, establishing the state’s rightful claims over the entities under Dr. Yunus’s control. Instead, after assuming power, Dr. Yunus allegedly cancelled a Tk 666 crore tax payment order for Grameen Kalyan and gradually nullified all other income tax cases, as well as labour court convictions and ACC proceedings, without following due legal process.

Were The Cases Politically Motivated?

The officer rejected claims that the cases against Dr. Yunus were politically motivated or harassing. Income tax cases had been running in courts for over a decade. The labour cases were filed by the Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishments based on workers’ applications. ACC cases stemmed from specific complaints regarding workers’ profit-sharing entitlements and had been pending for over two years.

Dr. Yunus availed himself of all possible legal avenues at every stage. If the cases were truly politically driven, the officer argued, they would not have dragged on for so long under judicial oversightโ€”they would have been resolved quickly through government intervention, as happened after Dr. Yunus assumed power.

He guaranteed that in any court in the world, Dr. Yunus would lose these cases on merit, which is precisely why, upon gaining authority, all proceedings were withdrawn without due process rather than defended openly.

Jurisdiction Under NSI Mandate

Addressing whether his involvement exceeded his authority or was personal, the officer cited the 1972 NSI Ordinance signed by the Father of the Nation, which explicitly empowers the agency to work on any matter concerning national interest and security.

Recovering the state’s rightful dues through legal channels is undoubtedly a matter of national interest. If it had been personal, it would not have appeared in his official confidential report. Therefore, he maintained that this was part of his professional responsibilityโ€”and he takes pride in it.

Why Go Public Now?

During active investigations, he never disclosed anything publicly, adhering strictly to professionalism and legal channels. However, after Dr. Yunus assumed power, the overnight erasure of cases, evidence, and irregularities convinced him that the public deserved to know about these alleged anti-national actions. He expressed zero regret for speaking out.

He views the charge sheet as proof of success during his ten-year career, not a mark of failure. He has worked on many other critical national and public-interest matters during serviceโ€”duly documented in his personal reports with supporting evidenceโ€”but never discussed them publicly out of professionalism. If accused of those in the future, he warned, he would be compelled to speak.

No Regret, No Escape Motive

Responding to insinuations that he fled due to wrongdoing or sought political asylum, the officer noted his strong academic and professional background: HSC from Notre Dame College (one of the country’s top institutions), graduation from BUET, plus advanced degrees and courses from Bangladesh Institute of Management, Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Professionals, and Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Korea.

If settlement abroad had been his goal, he could have achieved it on merit aloneโ€”no special circumstances required.

Speaking against Dr. Yunus’ alleged misrule has made his entire family vulnerable and thrust them into uncertaintyโ€”a conscious decision. His wife and family have stood by him with utmost courage. Dr. Yunus, he alleged, has weaponised the entire state machinery against him out of personal vendettaโ€”the charge sheet being just a small document of that campaign.

Yet he harbours no regret. Revealing the truth to the people was necessary. Having worked closely on Yunus-related matters, he claimed prior knowledge of the impending disaster Dr. Yunus would bring to the country. The public has seen some of it over the past 18 monthsโ€”and will see the rest as the full extent of alleged wrongdoing under the “Yunus regime” gradually comes to light.
