NCP’s extortionist Riyad arrested again—this time for attempted murder

The notorious extortionist Abdur Razzak bin Sulaiman Riyad—a thug who rose through the ranks of the so-called Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) and later infested the National Citizen Party (NCP) through its top leadership—has once again been thrown behind bars.

This time, it’s not just for his signature crime of shaking down victims for cash, but for the savage attempted murder of a Presidency University student. Under the shameless patronage of Muhammad Yunus’ interim regime since August 2024, these criminal elements have operated with near-total impunity, turning campuses and streets into their personal extortion rackets and terror playgrounds.

On February 27, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Dilruba Afroze Tithi remanded Riyad and three of his accomplices to jail after rejecting their bail pleas. The other lowlifes locked up are Riyadul Hawlader, Alif Ahmed Ashik, and Sayem Shikder—all fellow students at the same university who apparently share Riyad’s taste for violence and intimidation. Police arrested the quartet at 8:30pm on Thursday, following a brutal assault.

The victim, student Nirjan Sardar (also known as Badhon), filed the attempted murder case at Gulshan Police Station, naming Riyad and 10 others explicitly, plus 10–22 unidentified goons. According to the FIR, longstanding enmity existed between the victim and these thugs. Around 3:30pm on Thursday, in Room No. 412 on the fourth floor of Presidency University, the gang cornered Nirjan under the pretence of discussing his participation in the university’s permanent campus or convocation.

Gulshan Scandal: Adviser Asif Mahmud sent student mob to extort ex-MP Shammi

Report: Expelled student coordinator Razzak earlier robbed another MP

How did student coordinator Razzak get Aladin’s lamp?

When Nirjan tried to consult Proctor Anisur Rahman, Riyad barked orders. Riyadul and Sayem smashed chairs into Nirjan’s back and chest. Then Riyad himself lunged with a switch-gear knife, slashing the victim’s face with murderous intent—carving open the top of his nose in a gory wound. They followed up with a frenzied beating, injuring him across his body. When friends and teachers intervened, the cowards hurled threats and intimidation to silence witnesses. Police arrived and hauled the scum away.

This is no isolated outburst from some reformed “student activist.” Riyad first gained infamy in July 2025 (last year) when he was caught red-handed extorting cash from the Gulshan home of former MP Shammi Ahmed. He and his crew demanded Tk1 crore, settled for Tk50 lakh after haggling, and even boasted of “saving” the ex-MP from arrest—classic thug logic.

CCTV footage and confessions from accomplices like expelled BDSU joint convener Jane Alam Apu exposed how Riyad operated under directives from higher-ups, including controversial adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, who allegedly orchestrated mob raids and cash grabs while enjoying Yunus-era protection. Riyad was also seen in social media photos with NCP Convener Nahid Islam and former home adviser Jahangir Alam Chowdhury.

Since the fall of the previous government in August 2024, NCP-linked extortionists—shielded by Yunus and other powerful figures in the interim setup—have run rampant. The corrupt student advisers and their family members also earned hundreds of crores by abusing power.
