SHSP Survey: 87% of Awami League supporters will not vote, 92% support Jatiya Party

A survey conducted under the initiative of the Sheikh Hasina Sangram Parishad (SHSP) has identified the upcoming February 12 election and referendum as a “farce” among leaders, activists, and supporters of the Awami League and its affiliate organisations.

The survey, carried out from February 2 to 7 via WhatsApp, Telegram, and Signal, involved 11,268 participants.

It was jointly conducted by the SHSP, along with the news portals The Daily Republic and Bangladesh Insights.

The survey results were released on February 11 by the Parishad’s President Tofazzal Hossain Rono and General Secretary Dr. Arif Khan.

Notably, Awami League President and five-time Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has issued a stern warning to the usurper Yunus and his group for illegally banning Awami League activities, denying the party the opportunity to participate in the election, and organising a one-sided election and illegitimate referendum.

She has called on the party’s leaders, activists, supporters, and all democratic forces to boycott the election and demanded fresh elections under a nonpartisan interim government with the participation of the Awami League.

Additionally, various international human rights organisations, parliamentarians from different countries, and professionals in Bangladesh have already issued statements against the Jamaat-controlled interim government, declaring that an election without the Awami League will not gain legitimacy.

The survey revealed that none of the participants expressed any willingness to vote on February 12. 87% directly stated they would not go to vote, while 13% said they would be forced to do so out of fear for their lives.

Regarding the referendum, 100% of participants did not support it.

When asked about voting for candidates from other parties in the absence of the Awami League, 92% favoured Jatiya Party candidates, 7% supported Communist Party candidates, and only 1% favoured BNP candidates.

GM Quader-led Jatiya Party (JaPa) is running independently in 198 seats with the plough symbol.

There was widespread scepticism among participants about the longevity of any government formed after the election: 76% believed it would last only one month, 12% said about three months, 7% said six months, and only 5% thought it could survive a year.

On the question of how many seats the Awami League might win in the next election if it participates, 24% said fewer than 50, 34% said fewer than 100, and 42% believed it could secure more than 150 seats.
