Sheikh Hasina Sangram Parishad demands halt to sham election, referendum

In a fiery condemnation of the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government, the Sheikh Hasina Sangram Parishad (SHSP) has branded the one-sided election and unconstitutional referendum as a blatant fascist conspiracy to hijack Bangladesh’s sovereignty and betray the spirit of the 1971 Liberation War.

The organisation, dedicated to upholding the ideals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his daughter, released a scathing press statement on February 8, accusing the “Western-backed killer fascist Yunus” regime of violating the constitution, misusing state institutions, and illegally banning the Awami League—the nation’s largest political force representing at least 50% of voters.

The Parishad, led by its President Hossain Tofazzel Ronu and General Secretary Dr. Arif Khan, described the February 12 exercise as a “farce” and “direct attack” on democracy, the constitution, and the sacrifices of millions during the independence struggle.

They charged that the Yunus clique seized power through conspiracy, jihadist terrorism, and rumour-mongering, then abused the law to outlaw the Awami League while denying it any role in the polls. This exclusion, they argued, disenfranchises vast swathes of the population, many of whom now realise they were deceived during the July 2024 uprising and fared better under Awami League governance.

Labelling the referendum on the so-called July Charter a “death knell” for national sovereignty, the statement warned that it represents a fascist blueprint to destroy the country and betray the blood of the 1971 martyrs. The Parishad urged all believers in independence, secularism, and true democracy to boycott this “grotesque process” outright.

Their demands are uncompromising: Immediately halt the sham election and illegitimate referendum; force Yunus to resign; form a neutral interim government; lift the unlawful ban on the Awami League and allow its participation; scrap the indemnity ordinance shielding July terrorists from accountability for murder, looting, arson, and destruction; investigate and prosecute Yunus and his cronies for extortion, corruption, and money laundering; conduct UN-supervised probes into all killings, disappearances, and violence since July 15, 2024; purge partisan politicization from the administration and judiciary; release all political prisoners; withdraw fabricated cases and annul politically motivated verdicts; and ensure the security of religious minorities, women, and marginalized communities.

The Sheikh Hasina Sangram Parishad, with its roots in defending the legacy of Bangabandhu and Sheikh Hasina, framed the current crisis as a profound betrayal of the nation’s founding principles. Their call echoes growing frustration among Awami League supporters who view the Yunus administration’s reforms as a thinly veiled power grab, especially with the Awami League effectively sidelined from the February 12 vote.
