Jamaat-Shibir under fire for capturing Alia madrasas

The Bangladesh chapter of the Pakistan-based Jamaat-e-Islami has established sole control over the governmentโ€™s Alia madrasas since the fall of the Awami League government.

The people of this country started madrasa education with their own money. They did not do it for any political purpose. It was done only for this purpose if Islamic ideology, Islamic Tahjib, Tamaddun, Tariqa, and Tasawwuf are right in this country.

But some have been doing politics in madrasas for so many years personally.

Bangladesh Jamiatul Mudarreseen President and the daily Inqilab Editor AMM Bahauddin made the remarks during a discussion at the Gausul Azam Complex in Mohakhali in the capital on Thursday.

He said that Jamiatul Mudarreseen has consciously tried so that it cannot do any kind of politics.

โ€œMany have been doing a lot of things secretly so far. But for the past 10 months, we have been worried that Jamaat has been directly interfering with and controlling madrasa education. This is a very dangerous matter for society,โ€ he added.

Earlier, BNP Standing Committee members Nazrul Islam Khan and Salahuddin Ahmed met with Bahauddin.

In his speech, Bahauddin said that Bangladesh Jamiatul Mudarreseen represents 20,000 darbars, 20,000 institutions, and 55 lakh students.

He said: โ€œIf the curriculum is created for a political purpose and the education system is run politically, we will have a similar situation to what happened in Afghanistan. Students are being created in the curriculum prepared by them (Jamaat). This is a very dangerous matter for the nation.โ€

The Inqilab editor also said that he told the VC of the Islamic Arabic University not to join a party. โ€œBut he did not listen. They (Jamaat) have made the entire Madrasa Board a party’s academe. The Madrasa Directorate is also under the control of that party.

โ€œWhether in power or the opposition, we want the BNP as a guardian of Bangladesh. They have responsibilities too.

โ€œNot only madrasa education, but no education should be under the control of a specific party. And there should be no politics in madrasas. We do not want Islami Chhatra Shibir or Chhatra Dal in the madrasas.

โ€œWhatever is needed for the needs of religion will be practised here. It is the right of the students to engage in politics and vote as individuals.โ€

BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan said that there may be political differences, but it is a personal matter. It is not right to impose the influence of any party on educational institutions in such a way that it seems as if the educational institutions have been taken over. This is coercion. Be it in strategy or reality. We (BNP) are against it.โ€

He said that BNP founder General Ziaur Rahman added Bismillahir Rahmaniir Rahim to the Constitution and faith and trust in Allah as fundamental principles.

โ€œBangladesh Jamiatul Mudarreseen is a non-political organisation of madrasa teachers and employees. Every year, millions of boys and girls are being educated in religious education through your hands, and they have been playing a very important role in society. I have not come to you to ask for votes; I have come to ask for prayers,โ€ he said.

Salahuddin said that the BNP is a political party that believes in Islamic values. โ€œWe want to expand madrasa education, but we do not want madrasas to become a centre of designated party politics.โ€

He added that no law will be enacted in Bangladesh that goes against Shariah, the Quran, and the Sunnah.

โ€œWe went to the Hathazari Madrasa, talked to the Nayeb-e-Amir of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, met with Sarsina Pir Sahib, and talked to the teachers of the Alia madrasas. โ€œThe aim is to unite all the people of Bangladesh and run the country in a way that there will be no division.โ€
