The long-awaited Bhola–Barishal Bridge project, which is extremely important for the people of Bhola, has recently come into the spotlight due to a significant increase in its estimated cost.
For decades, the people of Bhola have dreamed of a permanent road connection with the mainland. Currently dependent on waterways and ferry services, residents believe that the bridge will bring new momentum to communication, trade, and economic activities.
During the tenure of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the initial estimated cost of the 10-kilometer bridge was set at Tk 9,922 crore. However, in a recent parliamentary session, the Minister of Road Transport and Bridges stated that the projected cost has now increased to more than Tk 17,466 crore.
The near doubling of the cost within just a few years has raised concerns among various groups. Although it has been mentioned that there have been slight changes in the project’s length, the reasons behind such a significant increase in cost have not yet been clearly explained.
According to the government, this is a priority project and is expected to play a crucial role in improving the country’s transportation system. The issue has also drawn attention in political circles, where references have been made to commitments regarding infrastructure development.
Experts say that large infrastructure projects often face cost increases due to design changes, inflation, land acquisition challenges, and fluctuations in global construction material prices. However, they emphasize that ensuring transparency and effective oversight is essential to maintaining public trust.
Millions of people are eagerly waiting for the implementation of the Bhola–Barishal Bridge. There is now a strong expectation that the project will achieve its intended goals without creating unnecessary financial burdens.
