An Awami League leader, Ali Azgar Bhuiyan, was critically injured in an attack by a group of miscreants while visiting his in-laws on the day of Eid in Natore. The incident took place on Saturday (March 21) at around 7:00 PM in the Hajiganj area of Lakshmipur Kholabaria Union under Sadar Upazila.
Ali Azgar Bhuiyan is the president of Lakshmipur Kholabaria Union Awami League and also serves as the assistant headmaster of Sher-e-Bangla High School in the town.
According to the victim’s family, after offering Eid prayers, he went to visit his father-in-law, Mojibur Rahman, at his home in Hajiganj. In the evening, a group of 10–15 individuals, allegedly led by Jubo Dal leader Shahin along with Sajib, Saddam, and others, confirmed his presence and carried out a sudden attack at the residence.
The attackers reportedly used sharp local weapons to assault him, leaving him critically injured. The family also alleged that women present in the house were harassed during the attack.
Upon receiving the news, police rushed to the scene, rescued him in critical condition, and took him to Natore Sadar Hospital. After receiving initial treatment there, he was referred to Dhaka for advanced medical care due to the severity of his injuries.
Meanwhile, Shahin, the general secretary of Ward No. 6 Jubo Dal of Lakshmipur Kholabaria Union, denied any involvement in the incident. He stated, “Since I am involved in politics, any unwanted incident in the area is often blamed on me. But I have no connection to this attack, and we were not present in the area at the time of the incident.”
Officer-in-Charge of Natore Sadar Police Station, Shafiqul Islam, said that preliminary information suggests the victim had been in hiding. On Saturday evening, some local miscreants reportedly attacked him. Police rescued him and admitted him to the hospital.
He also added that no formal written complaint has been filed yet regarding the incident. Once a complaint is received, legal action will be taken against the perpetrators.
This incident has raised concerns about law and order in the area during the festive period, highlighting the risks political figures may face even during religious celebrations.
