BFIO Summons Bank Account Details of Asif Mahmud Sajib

The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has summoned the bank account information of Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, spokesperson of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and former Adviser for Youth and Sports. On Monday (March 2), the agency sent letters to 56 scheduled banks and non-banking financial institutions across the country regarding this matter.

The letter from BFIU instructed that within the next three working days, all details of Asif Mahmud’s personal bank accounts, transactions, and related documents must be collected and submitted to the agency.

During his student life, Asif Mahmud was active in student politics centered around University of Dhaka. He served as the president of the Dhaka University Student Rights Council and later gained recognition as one of the key coordinators of anti-discrimination student movements. He also emerged as one of the front-line leaders during the July mass uprising.

After the fall of the Awami League government, he was appointed as Adviser of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Ministry of Labor and Employment in the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. Later, he was also given responsibility for the Ministry of Local Government.

However, during his tenure as adviser, he faced repeated criticism over alleged abuse of power, exerting influence, and a lavish lifestyle. Various quarters have claimed that among former advisers, he is the one against whom the most corruption allegations have been raised. No official detailed response has been received from him regarding these allegations.

There have also been accusations that he exerted undue influence in his home constituency of Muradnagar ahead of elections, which sparked protests and unrest in the area.

As part of preparations to participate in the 13th National Parliamentary Election, he resigned from his adviser position on December 10, 2025. At that time, there were rumors that he would contest from the Dhaka-10 seat. However, he ultimately did not run in the election and instead served as the NCP spokesperson, overseeing the party’s election campaign.
