A leadership once presented as a symbol of integrity and anti-corruption is now facing growing questions. After Dr. Muhammad Yunus assumed power in August 2024, a narrative was widely promoted portraying him as an honest, neutral and patriotic figure. However, with time, that image is now being debated as various allegations emerge.
Recently, multiple complaints have reportedly been submitted to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against former advisers of the government and individuals associated with them. According to sources, the complaints began to accumulate shortly after the advisers left office. The allegations include financial irregularities, abuse of power and influence over administrative decisions.
Discussions have also surfaced regarding allegations against Dr. Yunus himself. Complainants claim that questions have been raised about financial management related to certain trusts and institutions. However, officials say the authenticity of these allegations will depend on proper investigation.
Former legal affairs adviser Asif Nazrul has also come under scrutiny, with allegations involving bribery, influence in bail procedures and financial transactions linked to judicial transfers.
Similarly, discussions have emerged about alleged irregularities involving environment adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan, energy adviser Muhammad Fawzul Kabir Khan, health adviser Nurjahan Begum and information adviser Mahfuz Alam.
The accusations include alleged misuse of project funds, irregularities in tender processes, bribery related to licensing decisions and the abuse of administrative authority. In addition, allegations have been raised against youth figure Asif Mahmud, including claims of large-scale financial misconduct, illegal transactions and money laundering, according to complainants.
Meanwhile, Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh, stated that no one is above the law and any allegation must be investigated impartially. He also noted that if such complaints remain unaddressed while individuals are in power, it raises important concerns.
Analysts say that no one can be declared guilty until allegations are proven. However, the increasing number of complaints has sparked public debate and curiosity. According to them, only a transparent investigation and proper accountability can reveal the truth.
Corruption allegations are not new in Bangladesh. However, when a government that came to power promising to fight corruption faces such accusations, it naturally attracts greater public attention. Observers are now watching closely how seriously these allegations are investigated and what conclusions eventually emerge.
