Historic Six-Point Day Today: Tribute to Bangabandhu, the Architect of Bengali Liberation

Today, June 7, marks the Historic Six-Point Day, a landmark occasion in the history of the Bengali nation’s struggle for autonomy and self-determination. The day is observed as a significant milestone in the political, economic, and cultural emancipation of the people of Bangladesh.

On June 7, 1966, the people of then East Pakistan participated in nationwide strikes and mass demonstrations in support of the Six-Point Program announced by Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The program sought to secure the legitimate rights of the Bengali people against discrimination and exploitation by the Pakistani ruling establishment. Over time, the Six-Point Program came to be recognized as the “Charter of Bengali Liberation.”

Historians regard the Six-Point Movement as the foundation of Bangladesh’s independence struggle, paving the way for the Liberation War of 1971. Despite imprisonment and political persecution, Bangabandhu remained steadfast in his commitment to securing the rights and dignity of his people.

To commemorate the occasion, various political, social, and cultural organizations across the country have organized discussions, prayer gatherings, wreath-laying ceremonies, and remembrance events highlighting the significance of the Six-Point Movement in the nation’s history.

On this historic day, the nation pays profound respect and gratitude to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, whose visionary leadership and unwavering struggle inspired the Bengali people to achieve an independent and sovereign Bangladesh.
