The Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant has been described as a landmark initiative in Bangladesh’s energy sector by former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Awami League Central Executive Member Mohammad Ali Arafat. He stated that the project is a crucial component of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s energy diversification strategy and will play a significant role during times of national crisis.
In a statement, Arafat noted that the Rooppur project is not only important for electricity generation but also reflects Bangladesh’s strategic and diplomatic strength. He remarked that by signing the agreement with Russia, Sheikh Hasina demonstrated an independent, sovereign, and firm foreign policy stance.
He further said that under Sheikh Hasina’s leadership, Bangladesh has established a strong position in the international arena. According to him, she prioritized national interests above all else and did not compromise, despite pressure from powerful global actors.
Arafat also addressed Bangladesh’s relations with India. He claimed that every agreement signed during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure safeguarded Bangladesh’s interests and that none of those agreements have required cancellation. He dismissed past allegations of “Indian dominance” as baseless.
He added that anti-liberation forces had made similar accusations against the Awami League in the past and continue to promote such narratives. He urged all concerned to move away from misleading propaganda and recognize the reality in the interest of the country.
Arafat concluded by saying that Sheikh Hasina’s leadership has played a vital role in Bangladesh’s development and progress, and that strategic projects like Rooppur will continue to strengthen the country’s economy and energy security in the future.
