The nation is observing Mujibnagar Day today, marking a defining moment in Bangladesh’s Liberation War and its journey to independence.
On April 17, 1971, the first government of independent Bangladesh formally took oath at Baidyanathtala, a mango grove in Meherpur, then part of Kushtia district. This historic site was later named Mujibnagar. At the ceremony, the Proclamation of Independence—adopted on April 10—was officially read out, providing a constitutional foundation for the new state.
The government was formed under the leadership of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, who had declared independence earlier. He was named President, although he was imprisoned in Pakistan at the time. In his absence, Syed Nazrul Islam served as Acting President, while Tajuddin Ahmad was appointed Prime Minister. Meherpur was declared the temporary capital.
The events leading to this moment began after the 1970 general election, when Pakistan’s ruling authorities refused to transfer power to the elected representatives. Tensions escalated on the night of March 25, 1971, when the Pakistani military launched a brutal crackdown on civilians, known as Operation Searchlight. In the early hours of March 26, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared the independence of Bangladesh.
The formation of the Mujibnagar Government gave the Liberation War a structured political and administrative leadership. It played a crucial role in organizing the war effort, mobilizing international support, and coordinating diplomatic initiatives.
Shortly after the oath-taking ceremony, the Pakistan Air Force launched an on Meherpur, forcing government leaders to relocate to India. From there, they continued to direct the war. After nine months of Bangladesh achieved victory on December 16, 1971.
Mujibnagar Day is being observed across the country with discussions, remembrance programs, and tributes to those who sacrificed their lives. The contribution of the Mujibnagar Government remains a cornerstone of Bangladesh’s independence history.
The day stands as a powerful reminder of unity, sacrifice, and determination in the nation’s struggle for freedom.
