This year’s Eid travel has brought tragedy to many families instead of joy. According to a report published by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, a total of 377 road accidents occurred across the country during the Eid travel period, resulting in the deaths of at least 394 people and leaving many others injured.
The report highlights that these accidents took place in the days leading up to and following Eid, reflecting a deeply concerning state of road safety in the country. High traffic pressure on highways, reckless driving, and lack of caution among drivers have been identified as the primary causes behind these incidents.
The organization also noted that unfit vehicles, unskilled drivers, and long hours of continuous driving significantly increased the risk of accidents. Weak enforcement of traffic laws and a lack of awareness among passengers further worsened the situation.
Experts warn that such alarming patterns of road fatalities have become a recurring issue during Eid every year. Despite repeated concerns, effective measures to prevent these tragedies remain inadequate.
They emphasized the need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, ensuring vehicle fitness, allowing drivers adequate rest, and raising public awareness. According to them, laws alone are not enough—proper implementation is crucial to bring meaningful change.
As the nation reflects on the losses, many hope that future Eid travels will no longer be overshadowed by such preventable tragedies.
