Allegations have emerged that a local Awami League leader was attacked and later threatened with an extortion demand of Tk 500,000 in Magura, sparking political tension in the area. Several activists allegedly linked to the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) have been accused of involvement in the incident.
According to reports, the incident took place in the Chaulia Union area of Magura Sadar. The victim, Kazi Jasim Uddin, is a leader of Tejgaon Thana Awami League and a former Organising Secretary of the Bangabandhu Projonmo League central committee.
Local sources claim that a group of miscreants attacked him near the Magura PTI School. He was reportedly beaten severely and left bloodied at the scene.
The attackers allegedly took away his motorcycle, two mobile phones, and the cash he was carrying at the time. It has also been claimed that the group later demanded Tk 500,000 from him as extortion and issued threats.
Observers say such incidents reflect the ongoing tension between rival political groups. They claim that violence, robbery, and extortion are sometimes used as tools to intimidate political opponents.
Statements from the accused parties were not immediately available. However, local residents have called for a proper investigation into the incident and legal action against those responsible.
