Former Chief Adviser of the interim government, Muhammad Yunus, declared himself a “Very Very Important Person” (VVIP) for one year shortly before handing over power, reportedly due to fears of possible public anger or mob attacks. The decision was made effective through a special gazette issued on February 10.
According to sources, the order was issued under Section 2(a) of the Special Security Force (SSF) Act–2021. As a result, even after leaving office, Dr. Yunus will remain under the security protection of the SSF for the next year. Typically, such protection is not automatically granted to outgoing heads of government. However, through this special notification, Dr. Yunus ensured the continuation of his security arrangement.
Questions have also been raised regarding transparency in publishing the gazette. Although government gazettes are usually published on the website of the Bangladesh Government Press, the gazette declaring Dr. Yunus as a VVIP was not found there. Deputy Director Mohammad Abu Yusuf of the BG Press said the document was printed based on instructions from the Chief Adviser’s Office, but it was not uploaded to the website following a special request.
Government sources say that under the “Security Rules for the President, Prime Minister, Chief Adviser and Other Important Persons, 2025,” SSF members will now be responsible for Dr. Yunus’s security at his residence, workplace, and during his movements both at home and abroad. Individuals seeking to meet him will also undergo strict background checks.
Analysts believe the security move may be linked to the recent rise in political violence and mob incidents in the country. According to data from various human rights organizations, numerous mob attacks have occurred over the past year and a half, resulting in many deaths. The fragile law-and-order situation and ongoing political tensions are believed to have heightened security concerns for the former head of government.
The issue has sparked debate in political circles. While some view it as a normal step for personal safety, others have questioned the secrecy surrounding the gazette and the process behind the decision.
