A Dhaka court has remanded BNP leader Md. Faruk for two days in connection with a violent machete attack on two individuals in the capital’s Mohammadpur area that stemmed from an extortion attempt.
The order was issued by Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam at Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court, following a police application for a 10-day remand to aid the ongoing investigation, on February 23.
Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police prosecution branch confirmed the development. According to the police, the accused was produced in court on Monday. The investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Raju Ahmed from Mohammadpur Police Station, requested the extended remand to recover the weapons used in the assault, arrest the other named and unidentified suspects, and fully uncover the circumstances of the incident.
The defense opposed the remand and sought bail, but after hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted only two days of custody.
In their remand application, police stated that preliminary evidence already links Faruk to the crime, making his interrogation in custody essential to identify accomplices, retrieve the “samurai” swords and other sharp weapons involved, and clarify the full motive behind the attack. Faruk was arrested the previous evening, around 7:40 PM on February 22, from the Daleshwari Para area of Kolatia under Keraniganj Model Police Station.

The case was lodged on February 23 at Mohammadpur Police Station by the complainant, Md. Rasel, a local businessman, who is under charges of attempted murder. The First Information Report names eight specific accused individuals, including Faruk, along with eight others who remain unidentified.
According to the FIR, the accused group had been controlling drug dealings in the Greenview Housing area. Rasel and his friend, Md. Mamun, had earlier shut down a drug spot in the locality, which angered the group. About 8 to 10 days before the assault, the accused demanded extortion money from roadside shopkeepers along Bosila Road in Mohammadpur. When Rasel, Mamun, and other locals resisted, the perpetrators issued death threats before leaving.
The attack occurred around 3pm on February 21 in the Bosila Road area, where the accused targeted Rasel and Mamun with “samurai” swords and other local sharp weapons, hacking them indiscriminately. The violence ended only when the victims’ cries drew local residents to the scene, prompting the attackers to flee. The injured men were rushed to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Police have described Faruk, sometimes referred to by the alias “Kala Faruk,” as a known extortionist with multiple prior cases registered at Mohammadpur Police Station. Following his arrest, officers paraded him in handcuffs through the streets in the Mohammadpur area while using a megaphone to warn against extortion and urge residents to report such crimes and help detain suspects. The incident underscores persistent concerns about extortion-related violence in parts of Dhaka, with the investigation continuing.
