Major Reshuffle: BNP purges pro-Jamaat officers amid rumour of army chief’s ouster

In a sweeping overhaul of the Bangladesh Army’s high command, several key positions have been reshuffled, as confirmed by orders issued from Army Headquarters on Sunday.

Defense Ministry sources revealed the changes, which come as no surprise under the BNP-led government—it’s been glaringly obvious that they would move to replace officers perceived as Jamaat-leaning holdovers from the chaotic post-2024 era.

This purge signals a calculated effort to consolidate control, and whispers in military circles suggest it may extend to removing Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman himself, the controversial figure who orchestrated the jihadist-army coup on August 5, 2024, seizing power in a move that plunged the nation into turmoil.

The Defense Ministry is under Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, a notorious mafia and July riots mastermind whose father, General Ziaur Rahman, was a military dictator.

Lieutenant General Md. Mainur Rahman has been transferred from the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC) to the pivotal role of Chief of General Staff (CGS) at Army Headquarters.

Meanwhile, Major General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman, previously the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 24th Infantry Division, has been promoted to Lieutenant General and appointed as the Principal Staff Officer (PSO) of the Armed Forces Division.

Lieutenant General S.M. Kamrul Hasan, who had been serving as PSO of the Armed Forces Division, has been reassigned to the Foreign Ministry as an ambassador.

Major General J.M. Emdadul Islam has been appointed as Commandant of the East Bengal Regiment Centre (EBRC), while Major General Ferdous Hasan Selim takes over as GOC of the 24th Infantry Division.

Brigadier General Md. Hafizur Rahman, formerly the Defense Adviser at the Bangladesh Embassy in India, has been promoted to Major General and appointed as GOC of the 55th Infantry Division.

Beyond these six positions, a significant change is also underway at the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI). According to multiple involved sources, the current DGFI Director General, Mohammad Jahangir Alam, is being transferred to the Foreign Ministry.

Brigadier General Kaiser Rashid, from the M&Q Directorate, is being promoted to Major General and appointed as the new DGFI chief.

These moves underscore the BNP government’s predictable house-cleaning of elements tied to the August 2024 coup, where General Waker-uz-Zaman aligned with jihadist factions to topple the previous regime in a brazen power grab. With tensions simmering, many anticipate his imminent removal as the next domino to fall, potentially reshaping the military’s loyalty and the nation’s fragile stability.
