Ex-minister Nowfel slams British journalist David Bergman for baseless claim

Former Education Minister Mohibul Hassan Chowdhury Nowfel has unleashed a scathing attack on British journalist David Bergman—better known as a shameless lapdog of Jamaat-e-Islami—branding him as a disgraced, agenda-driven hack obsessed with defaming Awami League leaders and activists.

In a blistering post on X on Saturday, Nowfel demolished Bergman’s latest smear piece published in the daily Prothom Alo, where the so-called “expert” (with zero legitimate credentials) recklessly labelled Nowfel and several party activists as “murderers” without a shred of real evidence.

This treacherous hit job, Nowfel exposed, relies on laughable leaps of logic and recycled garbage from Bergman’s cronies at the Sweden-based propaganda outlet NetraNews, which is funded by NED.

Nowfel ripped into the absurdity: “David Bergman, the self-appointed ‘expert’ on Bangladesh (without any qualification, of course) has implicated me and several activists of our party as ‘murderers’ in an article published in Prothom Alo.”

He highlighted the glaring hypocrisy: While Bergman hypocritically whines about an Awami League MP being wrongly charged in a case, he then wildly jumps to accuse Nowfel and others of responsibility for casualties in violent July 2024 clashes—where both sides fought fiercely in self-defense or attack—simply because some activists appeared in photos with him at unrelated political and social events.

Nowfel blasted the flimsy “justification”: “A random Sweden-based website that found photos of our activists standing with me at completely unrelated political and social events. On that basis alone, he argues it is ‘legally justified’ that I and others should be charged, without a single independent investigation ever being conducted.”

The former minister laid it bare: “Let this be clear: There is not one piece of credible evidence. No investigation. No findings. No proof. Only a phony article by his associate, NetraNews.”

He urged Bergman to learn basic law and sense—pointing out the irony that Bergman’s wife and father-in-law are lawyers—rather than peddling “deliberate malignancy and defamation” just because Nowfel and his supporters were on one side during the nationwide chaos of July 2024’s violence.

Nowfel summed up Bergman’s toxic pattern: “This is vintage David Bergman: a disgruntled former journalist, no portfolio in any recognised media outlet, and one singular obsession, to malign, defame, and falsely implicate #AwamiLeague activists wherever he finds them.”

He concluded with a damning truth: “Facts matter. Evidence matters. Opinion dressed up as investigative journalism does not.”

Bergman’s track record reeks of bias—he has long been accused of acting as a mouthpiece for anti-Awami League forces, including Jamaat sympathisers, while cloaking his attacks in the guise of “human rights” and “journalism.” His Prothom Alo piece, which cherry-picks photos and ignores context to push guilt-by-association nonsense, fits perfectly into this pattern of venomous, evidence-free character assassination.

Awami League supporters and patriots see through this charade: Bergman isn’t reporting—he’s weaponising media to settle old scores and shield his Islamist allies. Nowfel’s fierce rebuttal stands as a powerful defense against such baseless witch hunts, reminding everyone that slander isn’t journalism, and defamation won’t silence the truth.
