From soybean oil to vegetables, eggs, and fish — the prices of almost every essential item continue to rise. When customers ask shopkeepers which product has become cheaper, many sellers simply smile helplessly because they have no answer.

Most vegetables are now selling at around or above 100 taka per kilogram. A dozen eggs is close to 150 taka. The soybean oil market is also highly unstable. In many areas, oil is unavailable, while in others it is being sold in limited quantities. As a result, middle-class and low-income families are facing the greatest pressure.

Visits to local markets show that many families can no longer afford to buy everything they need. Some are skipping fish and buying only vegetables, while others are searching for cheaper alternatives instead of eggs. Salaried workers, laborers, and low-income households are struggling to manage their monthly expenses.

Even small retailers say the soybean oil shortage is artificial. According to them, someone is deliberately creating this crisis through stockpiling, supply control, or market manipulation. But the big question remains: who is responsible for identifying and stopping those behind it? The authorities who should be monitoring the market seem more busy repeating political slogans than taking effective action.

On one side, there are loud promises and slogans about development. On the other side, ordinary people are struggling just to afford basic food. “Bangladesh First” may sound powerful, but when the people of that Bangladesh cannot afford essential goods, questions naturally arise about the gap between slogans and reality.

Analysts say the country now needs visible action, not just promises. Without strong measures against artificial shortages, hoarding, and abnormal price hikes, the suffering of ordinary people will only increase. Right now, people in Bangladesh are not looking for speeches — they are looking for relief in the marketplace, where essential goods remain within reach.

The country’s market situation has now reached a point where daily shopping has become a major source of stress for ordinary people.
