According to the latest data from the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), inflation reached 9.04 percent in April. Over the past six months, inflation remained above 9 percent in five months. Although there was slight relief in March, the April figures have erased that hope.

Economists say the burden of inflation is hitting middle-class and low-income families the hardest. Many families once considered middle class are now struggling to survive as lower-middle-class households. Managing monthly expenses has become increasingly difficult for ordinary people.

On April 19, the government increased fuel prices significantly. Diesel rose from Tk 100 to Tk 115 per litre, kerosene from Tk 112 to Tk 130, octane from Tk 120 to Tk 140, and petrol from Tk 116 to Tk 135. The increase in fuel prices quickly affected transportation costs, and that impact is now visible in markets across the country.

Market visits in Dhaka and other regions show that vegetable prices have increased by Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kilogram within just two weeks. Prices of fish, meat, and other daily essentials have also gone up sharply. As a result, many families are struggling to balance their household budgets.

At the same time, the national average wage growth in April was only 8.16 percent, which is lower than the inflation rate. This means people’s real income is shrinking every month. Economists warn that purchasing power is declining, debt is increasing, and many families are being forced to cut spending on food, clothing, healthcare, and other essential needs.

The political situation has also become part of the public debate. The national election held on February 12 remains controversial because major opposition parties did not participate. Questions over the legitimacy of the election are still being discussed across the country. Since taking power, the BNP-led government has faced criticism over its handling of the economy.

Concerns are also growing over the country’s rising foreign debt. Political critics claim that despite taking massive loans over the past 18 months, ordinary citizens have not seen any real improvement in their lives. Instead, people continue to suffer from electricity shortages, rising fuel prices, expensive food, and increasing healthcare costs.

Analysts say inflation does not disappear quickly once prices rise. The impact of fuel price hikes usually continues for several months. Many fear the situation could worsen further around the upcoming national budget, with the possibility of new taxes and additional price increases.

Overall, ordinary people across the country are living under severe economic pressure. The gap between income and expenses continues to widen, while questions remain about whether the government is taking effective action to control the market and reduce inflation. Citizens now hope for urgent measures that can bring stability to prices and some relief to everyday life.

Inflation in the country has increased once again, putting more pressure on ordinary citizens.
