He said there is no precedent anywhere in the world for banning a major political party through executive orders or legislation. According to him, a party that represents a significant portion of the population cannot be eliminated in this manner without undermining democratic principles.

Dr. Karzon emphasized that the Awami League is not merely a political party; it has deep social, cultural, and intellectual roots. Therefore, he argued, it cannot be easily uprooted through administrative or legal measures.

He warned that the growing tendency to ban political parties could create a serious crisis for the country’s future. The same legal standards used to ban one party today could be applied to others after a change in government, leading the nation into a cycle of bans and political retaliation.

Responding to a question about whether such a law would withstand judicial scrutiny, Dr. Karzon said the Constitution is the supreme law of Bangladesh. Any law that conflicts with fundamental rights or human rights guaranteed by the Constitution is likely to be struck down by higher courts.

Criticizing certain actions of the current government, he noted that emotionally driven or impulsive decisions—similar to those made by past governments—often prove self-defeating. He added that such decisions were not expected from the present administration.

Referring to the current geopolitical situation, Dr. Karzon expressed concern that Bangladesh is passing through a fragile and complex phase. He remarked that global power dynamics often favor governments that align with external interests.

In this context, he also said that the leadership and patriotism demonstrated by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina should be properly evaluated.

Overall, speakers in the discussion observed that banning political parties could have long-term negative impacts on democracy, political stability, and tolerance in the country.

Former cricketer and politician Mashrafe Bin Mortaza has described any legal move to ban the Awami League as a “self-destructive decision.” He stated that the party will not fade away;…

[83
77,2045
post-7278","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-opinion","tag-awami-league","tag-mashrafe-bin-mortaza
["GET
