{"id":5076,"date":"2025-12-05T01:55:54","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T19:55:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/dailyrepublicbd.com\/?p=5076"},"modified":"2025-12-05T01:56:48","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T19:56:48","slug":"awami-league-denounces-ict-bd-warrant-against-sajeeb-wazed-joy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/dailyrepublicbd.com\/?p=5076","title":{"rendered":"Awami League denounces ICT-BD warrant against Sajeeb Wazed Joy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The Bangladesh Awami League has issued a scathing <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/albd1971\/status\/1996661689971101845\/photo\/1\">statement <\/a>condemning the Jamaat-controlled International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) for issuing an arrest warrant against Sajeeb Wazed Joy, the son of deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her former honorary adviser on Information and Communication Technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a strongly worded press release late Wednesday, the Awami League described the warrant as \u201cbaseless, absurd, and politically motivated,\u201d accusing the tribunal of being turned into a \u201ckangaroo court\u201d under the interim government led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ICT-BD, which is probing alleged crimes against humanity committed during the student-led uprising that toppled the Awami League government in August 2024, has charged Sajeeb Wazed\u2014widely known as Joy\u2014with offenses including the country-wide internet shutdown and complicity in what the tribunal calls \u201cgenocide\u201d between July and August last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Awami League statement rejected the charges outright, pointing out that Joy was abroad during the entire period of the violence and has remained outside Bangladesh ever since. \u201cHe has no realistic opportunity to appear before a court controlled by militants and terrorists,\u201d the party said, calling the warrant \u201ca complete violation of human rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyrepublicbd.com\/?p=4825\">Sheikh Hasina: Despite propaganda, Awami League still the most popular party<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyrepublicbd.com\/?p=5054\">Disappearance Case: How Jamaat-run ICT-BD flexing muscles for revenge<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/dailyrepublicbd.com\/?p=5051\">106 charge sheets filed amid row over fake July martyrs and selective justice<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The party further accused Professor Yunus of weaponising the 1973 tribunal\u2014originally established to try collaborators of Pakistani forces during the 1971 Liberation War\u2014to settle political scores and \u201ctake revenge for the defeat of 1971.\u201d It claimed the interim administration represents \u201cillegal usurpers, killers, fascists, and anti-liberation forces\u201d seeking to destroy the legacy of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the idea of an independent Bangladesh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Describing Sajeeb Wazed as the \u201carchitect of Digital Bangladesh,\u201d the statement praised his unpaid advisory role in transforming the country into a technology-driven nation and called him \u201can iconic leader to the new generation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Awami League vowed to continue its struggle \u201ctogether with the people\u201d against what it labelled a \u201ccalculated conspiracy\u201d to render both Bangladesh and the party leaderless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, Sheikh Hasina described the revived ICT-BD as politically motivated and procedurally illegal. \u201cThe court he has set up\u2014the \u2018International\u2019 Crimes Tribunal\u2014where is the \u2018international\u2019 part?\u201d she asked. \u201cThey appoint a 72- or 73-year-old judge when High Court judges retire at 67. There are no rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis law was enacted in 1973 to try war criminals,\u201d she continued. \u201cBut now, without parliament, they amend the law again and again through executive orders\u2014even during the trial. That is not justice; that is a mockery.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said that she was unaware of the exact charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/chrome-extension\/\/efaidnbmnnnibpcajpcglclefindmkaj\/https:\/\/files.albd.org\/Crisis-in-Bangladesh\/ICT-Verdict-statement-death-penalty.pdf\">Written Statement<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am speaking to you today not knowing exactly what human rights violations I have already been sentenced to death for,\u201d she said. \u201cMy question is\u2014how did I violate human rights? Whom did I kill? That is my question. How will they prove it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLet Yunus pronounce my death sentence as many times as he wants. He whom Allah keeps alive, who can kill?
