The writer identified herself as the third wife of Mufti Mamunur Rashid Qasemee and levelled devastating accusations: continued rape after verbal divorce, forced pregnancy, coerced abortion, drug abuse by the mufti, nine marriages, and the operation of a \u201chalal brothel\u201d disguised as the Ideal Marriage Bureau (IMB).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three weeks later, on November 6, Ekushey Television\u2019s flagship investigative programme \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=b0NboFX4F9g&amp;t=784s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">21 er Chokh<\/a>\u201d broadcast an hour-long expos\u00e9 that left the nation reeling. Persuaded by relatives that a pious scholar wished to shoulder responsibility for her and her child, she discovered on her wedding night that Qasemee neither prayed nor abstained from intoxicants. Beatings followed. After a verbal divorce, he continued to force himself on her. When she became pregnant, his relatives held her down and forced abortion pills into her mouth. \u201cI did not want to lose my baby,\u201d she wept.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mufti\u2019s past is equally sordid. Classmates from Hathazari and Deoband madrasas described a student already addicted to drugs and serial illicit relationships\u2014including affairs with his own cousins and a teacher\u2019s wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His father, the respected Mufti Aminul Islam of Kushtia, appeared on camera disowning him: \u201cHis actions are beyond my knowledge and beyond my tolerance. I threw him out of the house.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Kushtia and later in Dhaka, a pattern emerged: marriages to vulnerable women, violence, extortion, swift divorce, and immediate pursuit of the next target. Local residents confirmed he had married a 13-year-old girl. He is also a director of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/MamunurRashidQasemi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Markazus Shareeya Al-Islamia, Bangladesh<\/a>&nbsp;madrasa. He uses his official Facebook profile and pages for promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of this unfolded against the grim backdrop of the past 15 months. Since the bloody upheaval of August 2024, radical Islamist organisations have operated with near impunity. Public calls for jihad and full sharia enforcement fill the streets. Self-appointed morality squads\u2014often shielded by elements within the security forces\u2014have assaulted women for dress code \u201cviolations,\u201d torched minority homes, and carried out extrajudicial punishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The torture and public humiliation of women have become disturbingly routine, justified by the same distorted religious rhetoric Qasemee weaponised for profit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In this climate, the IMB was not an aberration; it was a commercialised microcosm of the broader assault on women\u2019s bodily autonomy and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By cloaking predation in the language of polygamy and charity, Mufti Qasemee built a pipeline that delivered the poorest and youngest females to wealthy men willing to pay for \u201csharia-compliant\u201d exploitation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tamanna Hatun\u2019s defiance, Ekushey Television\u2019s fearless journalism, and yesterday\u2019s arrest have together delivered the first significant blow against this nexus of religious extremism and gendered violence. Yet the question hangs heavy in the air: how many more \u201cmarriage bureaus\u201d and how many more self-appointed muftis continue to operate in the lengthening shadows cast since August last year?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, one predator is behind bars. But until the state confronts the ideology that bred him\u2014and the patronage that protected him\u2014countless other Tamannas remain at risk.
